Benchmarking Ordinance AB 802 - What is Assembly Bill 802 and and how to comply?
Assembly Bill 802 was passed by the State of California in October 2015 to introduce the Benchmarking and Disclosure Program. This program mandates building owners of structures over 50,000 square feet with either 17 or more residential utility accounts or no residential utility accounts to benchmark and disclose their building's energy performance through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. The objective of this initiative is to provide building owners with a comprehensive understanding of their energy consumption by utilizing standardized energy use metrics that facilitate intelligent and cost-effective improvements in building energy use.
Benchmarking a building involves monitoring and measuring your performance against an established standard. In the case of buildings, benchmarking involves tracking the energy, water, or waste metrics of your building and comparing them to those of similar structures. This allows you to assess your building's performance in comparison and identify areas for improvement, possibly even providing you with incentives to make changes or upgrades to enhance your building's efficiency and achieve a higher rank compared to other similar buildings.
